If you think you may have sleep apnea, avoid alcohol or drugs that relax the central nervous system. Alcohol will relax the central nervous system. When a person drinks too much alcohol or takes drugs that relax the central nervous system, it can cause the muscles of the throat to relax. This can cause a form of central sleep apnea.
Even one glass of wine just before bed can worsen your snoring and sleep apnea. You should avoid drinking alcohol for at least four hours before going to bed. Alcohol can also make it harder for the brain to “wake up.” This means that episodes of sleep apnea will last longer and will be more dangerous.
